Carrying in the Spirit
This month's newsletter takes a different turn from many of the others, as I will attempt to explore the least understood of the great spiritual privileges for an intercessor--that of "Carrying Someone in the Spirit." (This label was coined by Don and Beverly Davis, who served under the ministry of Mom and Pop Goodwin.)
An example of The art of Carrying:
I want to begin by giving an account told to me by Don.
Sometime ago, Don overheard a conversation between two men at a conference, they were discussing the struggles being faced by another minister. Don was not acquainted with the minister in question and did not meet him for several years after this occasion. The Spirit touched Don's heart, and he understood he must take the assignment to "Carry this brother in the Spirit." That would mean intercession and becoming a spiritual watchman over this person's life.
(Allow me to say this is NOT being a spiritual covering nor is it shepherding.)
As Don began to pray and seek the Lord, the Lord revealed spiritual hindrances in the man's ministry. Don prayed and challenged those forces, waging spiritual warfare. (Remember this man had no idea Don was laboring in his behalf.)
Time passed and without revealing the various challenges Don faced, this minister flourished--as did his ministry. During this period, he not only organized a church, he also began a massive
building program. It was this building project that immediately caused a financial strain requiring 1.5million dollars to complete. The pastor became discouraged, even though there were multiple victories in his life and work. Don prayed and called for the funds in the Spirit realm. Subsequently, a stranger confronted the pastor shortly thereafter (in the church parking lot, where he called the minister alongside his auto) and handed him a check for the total amount.
After these overwhelming deliverances, Don finally was able to attend his services. (Don resided over 300 miles away from this church). During the service, the Lord gave Don a word for the church.
(Don had met the pastor briefly just 30 minutes before the service. The pastor did not know Don had been carrying him in the Spirit nor did Don tell him. Nothing about the church was even mentioned in that brief introduction; therefore, Don did not have any prior knowledge of current circumstances in that church.)
Don, however, was greatly distraught and did not want to rise and give the prophetic appeal.
(Allow me to say, the Lord often reveals matters affecting the "carried one's life" that are supernatural in nature. [Like: names, faces, numbers and details not garnered by ordinary means]. Familiarity with these times and events breeds understanding well beyond human reasoning. The "carrier" may not be able to explain how he knows, he or she just knows.)
Don offered the Lord excuses like, "Here I sit Lord, with people close on both sides of me; besides, there is no occasion afforded me to 'give such a word.'" Seconds later, the pastor asked everyone to stand and praise the Lord. The opportunity to move was now afforded!
Don stood and started toward the nearest aisle and stood, ultimately, in front of the pastor. His excuses had been taken away.
Upon telling the pastor his reason for standing there (as the worship team continued in Praise), the pastor replied, "I don't know you." Don answered, "But I know you in the Spirit and the Lord has given me this word. However, I will yield to your authority and will stand in the aisle or return to my seat, if you so decide."
("Carriers" rarely force issues and mostly allow the Spirit to open doors.)
Moments later, the pastor acknowledged Don, after dismissing the worship team. The crowd stood in awe as Don spoke God's message. Three appeals were made in that word. First, an appeal was made for salvation (15 people responded). This was followed by an appeal for repentance. Third, an appeal was made to return to zealousness in the worship of the Lord. Just after the first appeal, the pastor rose and called for all those who wanted to repent and seek the Lord to come forward. The front was filled with folks weeping and getting right with God.
One lady, two rows forward, lunged sideways and fell into the aisle. Several people had tears streaming down their faces and found themselves confessing their sins and repenting. Many people sought out folk in the congregation and righted their relationships with them. There was so much activity going on, spiritually, that the pastor said, "Only God could have done this and we don't need my message for today." Because Don had returned to his seat after delivering his word, the pastor sought him out and said, "Who are you?" Don told him many things about himself and the church at large and how he had been faithful to follow the Lord in "carrying" him.
(Sometimes the carrier is allowed to reveal his/her identity. At other times, their cloak of authority is never recognized. It might just be enough for one to see the result of one's faithfulness under the banner of, "Many good things can be accomplished, as long as one does not care who gets the credit.")
"Carrying" gives one spiritual authority and place.
It is a humbling work, but greatly rewarding. "Carrying authority" often does not manifest itself apart from the prayer closet.
Somehow, in the fellowships and churches, the work of this nature is not preached about or explored. It is a taxing office, for it requires both time and devotion. It is not a popular seminary subject. Sometimes, it is akin to "birthing." Sometimes, it assumes a shepherd's role, but always behind the scenes--for no "grandstanding" is compatible with its outcomes.
When Don stood with a word, it was accompanied with the "groaning of the Spirit's intercession" for both the man and his church. Such words are not to be taken lightly or ignored, for they carry with them that "knowing" which pierces the darkness. Unlike the prophetic ministry, this carries with it a different element in the Spirit, which finds its target and does its work far beyond the machinations of man.
My own experience:
During the Soviet days of religious persecution, a picture and letter appeared in a mission's magazine published by a close friend. When I read the letter, written from a Siberian Prison,
I immediately knew I must take action in the Spirit. Alexander Ogorodnikov asked his mother, in the letter, to pray for his death or his release, for conditions were unbearable. (Alexander was a college student, arrested and sentenced for defying orders not to hold Bible studies in his apartment.) Months went by, as groaning for him often occurred three and four times a day. Never did I go anywhere that his picture was not in my mind. Finally, after a year of such "carrying," I read a small insert in the Dallas News, "Dissident Alexander Ogorodnikov was released from prison today, by the Supreme Soviet."
Words could not express the joy of my heart, and even though I have never met him, he will always be a part of me. Surely, there were others interceding for Alexander. My task was not to "look around" for support, but listen to the Lord's prompting.
"Carrying" is often a lonely and solitary task; few understand or appreciate this work. Many times, it is impossible to share with anyone on earth the interactions and interchanges going on in the Spirit. Thus, little is written about the subject.
God alone knows how many times "we" may have been "carried."
Those who mentor are often the "carriers" for their progeny. Paul had a record of mentoring and carrying. One may look at young Timothy or Barnabus or Silas or Onissimus, as in the example below. Onesimus, the runaway slave had been "carried" by Paul for some time, and now he was to be "birthed" back to his owners.
Notice what authority Paul uses and how he bridled it in lieu of a tender appeal. Onesimus came to him as a "runaway" slave and ended up being Paul's armor bearer. Burgeoning from the appeal to receive him as a changed man, Paul does not offer a resume of Onessimus's past, but a bold desire to assist him in a newly formed future. "Carriers" go to great lengths to facilitate those they birth. The mentor is infused with the life of his charge. Inseparability, along with confidence in the work (completion of the carrying task), has blended into dual identity (the carrier and the carried as one), which is credential enough.
Therefore, though I might be very bold in Christ to command you what is fitting, 9 yet for love's sake I rather appeal to you - being such a one as Paul, the aged, and now also a prisoner of Jesus Christ. 10 I appeal to you for my son Onesimus, whom I have begotten while in my chains, 11 who once was unprofitable to you, but now is profitable to you and to me.
12 I am sending him back. You therefore receive him, that is, my own heart, 13 whom I wished to keep with me, that on your behalf he might minister to me in my chains for the gospel. 14 But without your consent I wanted to do nothing, that your good deed might not be by compulsion, as it were, but voluntary.
15 For perhaps he departed for a while for this purpose, that you might receive him forever, 16 no longer as a slave but more than a slave - a beloved brother, especially to me but how much more to you, both in the flesh and in the Lord.
17 If then you count me as a partner, receive him as you would me. 18 But if he has wronged you or owes anything, put that on my account. 19 I, Paul, am writing with my own hand. I will repay - not to mention to you that you owe me even your own self besides. 20 Yes, brother, let me have joy from you in the Lord; refresh my heart in the Lord.
21 Having confidence in your obedience, I write to you, knowing that you will do even more than I say. 22 But, meanwhile, also prepare a guest room for me, for I trust that through your prayers I shall be granted to you.
The end game for the "carrier" is to give birth to a viable saint. When one "carries" another for any length, there is an umbilical attachment to that person. They are "constantly" before you and in your thoughts and prayers in streaming fashion. To give birth requires a parting and distancing that is par for the process. Holding on, beyond that certain "time' in the Spirit, would bring harm and conflict.
Notice, Paul was in a "birthing" capacity. He was asking the Galatians whether he "birthed them" too soon and now they needed to be "carried" some more and birthed at a later moment.
Paul was making some spiritual inferences about Galatia. When one "births," they know the
spiritual condition of the one being birthed. It is often necessary to give that person a starting point-a birth date.
19 My little children, for whom I labor in birth again until Christ is formed in you, 20 I would like to be present with you now and to change my tone; for I have doubts about you.
Spiritual appraisal does not come through man's normal channels of reasoning, but through the Spirit. The perception of the "carrier" is often different than that of the one being carried. Self appraisal may say, "It's time for the cap and gown," while, in truth, there is need for more schooling.
"Carrying" is solely a work of the Spirit all the way through.
"Carrying" is also part of the work of grace. Grace enables and causes the recipient to be able to
bridge the gap between where they are and where God wants them to be. "Carrying" forges a way through spiritual mazes to a point of clarity. Many a person, assigned by the Spirit to a "carrier," may not logistically be in their right place. The "carrier" is able to speak into that
person, through the Spirit, in order for the revelation of the will of God to come to them. Often this takes place in a flash of understanding. They may think, "Where did that thought come from?" or "Wow, I didn't know that place existed."
"Rama" may be the result of someone else's intercession and word of knowledge. Characteristic of those accustomed to "carrying" is the special grace to "speak into another person's life." I am not referring to "a prophetic" word. I am talking about sending things through the Spirit to another person through space and time without regard to proximity.
(Note: I have received messages directed to a specific church or place; while speaking in tongues, the Spirit said, "Send this to them Now." On one such occasion, I was mowing my lawn and was a full four-hundred miles from that congregation.)
Some may criticize such activity, but those who do limit God and the power of the Spirit to convey through a willing sender "Rama" for another.
Yet, we see Paul assessing what he had sent and wished to be conveyed to Thessalonica. He (in the quote below) is assuring them of his continued guardianship through prayer and the power of the Spirit.
26 Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. 27 Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God.
Paul had a sense of universality for those in his care. I have seen men and women who were leaders in their various denominations "carry" the entire work in groaning and intercession, beyond even their strength and capability. (A Nazarene leader called me once and said, "Every pastor we have should know what you have written. Not only would it enflame our clergy, it would permeate every area of our work. My prayer is that God would open the door of their hearts and minds to be confronted with The Sons of Zadok.) These kinds of people are emissaries for their folk. They long for the congregations to know what they know and their pastors to comprehend what they see in the Spirit.
1 Thessalonians 1:2-5
We give thanks to God always for you all, making mention of you in our prayers, 3 remembering without ceasing your work of faith, labor of love, and patience of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ in the sight of our God and Father, 4 knowing, beloved brethren, your election by God. 5 For our gospel did not come to you in word only, but also in power, and in the Holy Spirit and in much assurance, as you know what kind of men we were among you for your sake.
I have seen missionaries "carry" their work, not as a burden, but as a constant factor in every decision of life. They "know" what is needed in the lives of their pastors, and they are familiar with the intricacies of the churches. They stand in the genre of the first books of Revelation and call to order, in the Spirit, those things needful to advance the kingdom. Often their prayer is for "removal" of some "gatekeeper" who, rather than listen to the Spirit, takes charge of their field and regard it as his work and possesses it as "mine."
I am thoroughly convinced the reason so much error abounds today in the church is for the lack of "carriers." An old saying is "That which is everyone's business is nobody's business." The church has been willing to receive its thousands, baptize them and leave them to the wiles of the devil. The ministry of watching has been denigrated to "watching" judgmentally and not caring for the spiritual growth of the populace the Spirit harvests.
2 Tim 4:1-6
I charge you therefore before God and the Lord Jesus Christ, who will judge the living and the dead at His appearing and His kingdom: 2 Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching. 3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; 4 and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables. 5 But you be watchful in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.
6 For I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my departure is at hand.
Instead of counselors, the church needs "carriers." I say that because the world has invaded the ranks of the church until behavioral science has convinced congregations that man can fathom man without the input of the Holy Ghost. "Carriers" are able to cut to the root of situations that leave the heads of therapists shaking. I have seen church counselors condon sin and error that no pulpit should approve, yet they continue.
"Carriers" are a different breed. The tender, compassionate folk I know who work in this endeavor are the best and loveliest in Christendom and most often shy away from the public eye. They know things in the Spirit that others neither fathom nor are able to comprehend. To them, the "mysteries" of the gospel are their fare, and they excel in the attributes outlined by Paul.
John G. Lake was a "carrier" in the Spirit. He tells of being transported out of his body (he was kneeling in prayer is S. Africa when this occurred). He was transported in the Spirit out of his body to an asylum in Wales. He entered through secured gates that opened to him and found a specific room where a woman was writhing, strapped on a bed. She was insane. He placed his hands on her head and she calmed. He returned to his body in S. Africa. In relating this event, he detailed mountains and cities and roadways that, after the advent of aircraft, were authenticated. Word came a few months later to one of the church members saying the lady had been released from the asylum, fully healed and gave the date of this transformation. It was the exact date of the supernatural visitation from Lake.
For this reason we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding; 10 that you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him, being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God; 11 strengthened with all might, according to His glorious power, for all patience and longsuffering with joy; 12 giving thanks to the Father who has qualified us to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in the light.
Impossible?-don't tell Philip. Don't tell Jesus. Don't tell Paul either; he is the one who said
he was willing to be "anathema" in order for his kindred to find Christ.
For who is it that can build a wall of protection, by the blood, around another? Who is it that can call to heaven to bear, in order to draw upon a deeper spiritual level than the "Carried one?"
Who is it that can see a clearer path than the "carried one" can see and charge angels to keep them from dashing their foot? Who is it that can walk in a purity higher than another and call for them to come alongside in order leave Sodom's plain? Who is it that can assist the weak and feeble to renew their strength in the battle of spiritual warfare? Who is it who can wrest another from deception in order that one so precious to the heart of God may denounce the miscreant doctrines of demons? Who is it that can pave the venues of life so that prophets have barriers removed? Who is it that can smooth the paths of evangelists and open doors for eras of spiritual enlightenment? Who is it that can appraise situations, speak words into the unthinkable and claim sovereignty over death, destruction and disease?
Is it the worship team?
Is it the smoke and mirrors of theater church?
Answer this or be forever silent in the abyss called religion.
Until next month,
Dr. Cosby R. Oliver, PhD.

I don't know if you've noticed, but America is crumbling all about our feet (I speak metaphorically).
We are soldiers of Christ; think back to WWII.. would an allied soldier over in Europe think he was there for any other reason but to fight the German, Japanese, and Italian aggression? We have put on the whole armor of God and are to fight the enemy.
This is the news I am writing you to proclaim: WE ARE TAKING BACK AMERICA! I don't know about you, but I am not going down without a fight. No longer am I going to be fearful and quiet in the face of such an onslaught. Enough is enough. Onward Christian soldiers!
Please join me with your prayers, proclaiming the truth- the Word of the Lord, the gospel and ( to paraphrase Psalm 91:14): "..setting your love upon God and He will deliver us."
To my catholic friends I must insert this: The Lord God/Jesus/Holy Spirit, not Mary is whose heart I abide and trust in, period. I could care less about what the Pope said or didn't say. My allegiance is to King Jesus, it is not tied to any denomination, man, or institution. I am part of the Body of Christ; all those who proclaim Jesus, Christ- Son of God, God made flesh, who bought and paid for my/our salvation through his shed blood and death on the cross, and the most important part, God raising HIm from the dead. This proclamation and people who stand upon these truths the gates of hell shall not prevail against. And get a hold of this: greater is He that is in me than he that is in the world.
And to those tireless catholic men and women who have been fighting abortion I know that God will honor your efforts and the recent video leaks are His light being shed upon and making what is being done is secret known.
My dear beloved friends, we're taking back America.
Please join me

"Our fight is not against flesh and blood but against principalities and powers".
Once again in the amazon. In the last several weeks I have been going out to the vocational center and spending time with our missionaries living there. We are working on final touches of the construction like putting in the water towers.
Note from DR. Oliver: This roofing project was funded with several thousand dollars contributed through Oliver Evangelistic Association in donations from your gifts. A theft of our contribution and the threatening of our missionaries seriously engages us in prayer, not only for protection but for the 7 fold return.
Adam and his wife are the are living at the New Horizons Training Center. Recently they have been experiencing spiritual oppression while they go about the day to day activities there.
Three weeks ago they went to Benjamin in the morning to buy more groceries. When they returned they found the house broken into and 96 metal roof sheets stolen as well as other tools and supplies.
The other day while Adam was working with the weed eater around one of the buildings, he started feeling that somebody was watching him. Hidden in the forest like a sniper, aiming at him, ready to pull the trigger. He tried to ignore it and started praying. He felt that what ever was out there was about to harm him so he ran back to the house.
When he got inside, his wife and his mother in law told him we felt that you where in danger and were here praying for you.
The next day Adam and Misileñy went out to Benjamin to purchase groceries for the week. On their way back, as they came across the property line of the vocational center, she felt something tying up her feet and she tripped and fell face first into the ground As Adam helped her up they checked to see what she had tangled on but could not find anything.
Then she started hearing this voice telling her: ' Why are you returning here? Why don't you leave as alone? We have been the owners of this territory for centuries, but you and all the others that George and Manoel have brought into here have damaged our castle, they have destroyed our fortress. Go and don't return! Leave us alone! '
I have experienced many situations like this myself, throughout these many years working in this jungle region. I know exactly who is doing this!
They are demons, that have established demonic principalities over regions and territories. They are being driven out!
They know they have been defeated by the Blood and the Presence of Jesus Christ IN us! But they can still oppress us and eventually could hurt us. This spiritual battle is real!
Back in Dallas, Edilma and I have been experiencing one of the hardest times in our lives with our physical health as well as the greatest struggle to find new resources to continue the ministry.
In this spiritual war for souls, we are the soldiers, the warriors on the front lines of the battle. We have also taken casualties in the battle but we cannot retreat to take care of our wounds in the middle of this fight. We know God will supernaturally heal our wounds!
As we continue to labor we find ourselves tired and running out of strength both physically and spiritually. We have been under a heavy attack from the enemy since the day we held the dedication service at the New Horizons Training Center in August of last year.
We have lost several financial support partners in the ministry and cannot open the vocational center because we do not have the necessary funds to cover the day to day costs. At times we feel we have been left to fend for ourselves. It has been a very, very difficult year.
I know that we are doing the Will of God and establishing His Kingdom in the Amazon. Otherwise those demons would not be so terribly upset and furious!
Those demons know this property is the "boot camp" where an entire army of indigenous soldiers will take up their spiritual weapons to defeat the demons that have oppressed their people, tribes and nations in this vast region of the jungle. They are doing everything possible to oppose us and discourage us.
"We will continue to put on whole Armor of God, we will resist
the evil one until the end, we stand firm".
Dear friend, we know you can not join us on the front lines. But we need you as part of the Body of Christ, to intercede for us, doing spiritual battle. We need powerful intersession and generous financial provision to enable us to continue the work of the Great Commission among eleven tribes in this valley in the Amazon jungle.
If in the past you had promised to intercede for us, or to support us financially and for some reason you have not been able to do so, please seek God in prayer right now as to how you should partner with us.
We urgently need your obedience to His word. Please pickup your spiritual weapon now, intercede for the work and ask God to guide you in your financial support of our ministry. Help us WIN THIS WAR for the souls of these people for the Kingdom of God!
Until they ALL hear,
George, Edilma and the Amazon Xpeditions Team.
P.S : Edilma in Dallas will be very encouraged to hear from you. Ph. (469) 682-7813
