Studies of the Spirit in the New Testament
I & II Corinthians

You may watch this Newsletter in a video HERE.

Introduction:

In keeping with our design of taking each of the epistles in the order of their release, we note our study of James (44-45AD), Galatians (49AD), Jerusalem Council (50AD), 1 &2 Thessalonians (51AD) and now 1&2 Corinthians (56 AD). The two Corinthian epistles were circulated during Paul's third missionary journey.

Corinth, at this time, was literally sin city. The roman baths were co-ed\; the temple worshippers had religious prostitutes and the sidewalks had tile images of phalluses. Redemption from this culture was evident in Paul's concerns.

Paul's spiritual growth is unparalleled in his writings, as his themes change throughout his epistles.

His great knowledge of Scripture, and his excellent education under Gamaliel, allowed him the ability to interject Old Testament passages as he unfolded revelation about Jesus. The book of Romans was written during this time and was directed toward the Jews (who were well versed in the Law) as well as to Gentile converts, who were not accustomed to covenant.

I Corinthians:

Aside from the fact that chapter one verse two gave me the title of one of my books, Called to be Saints," Corinthians lays heavy interest in holiness.

Paul also attacked those who were spreading division in their congregations ("I am of Paul" and another saying "I am of Apollos").

It is not until chapter two, however, that he addresses elements of the Spirit directly.

1 Corinthians 2:1-5:
1 And I, brethren, when I came to you, did not come with excellence of speech or of wisdom declaring to you the testimony of God. 2 For I determined not to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified. 3 I was with you in weakness, in fear, and in much trembling. 4 And my speech and my preaching were not with persuasive words of human wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, 5 that your faith should not be in the wisdom of men but in the power of God.
NKJV

Ah! There is the difference between pulpits and preachments today. Man's wisdom has taken the place of the demonstration of the "Spirit and of power." Excellence of speech can't take the place of "Spirit and power." Pride-filled declarations can't take their place. Persuasive words can't take the place of "Spirit and power."

Nothing short of "Spirit and power" is acceptable to God, and all other substitutes fall short of the glory of God and become sin. Do you hear what is being said, "it is sin to present the gospel of Jesus with anything less than 'Spirit and power.'" "Sermonettes" spoken to "Christianetts" won't cut it.

Herein is Paul's definition of "Spirit" coupled with "power."

1 Corinthians 2:10-16:
But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God. 11 For what man knows the things of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God. 12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God.

13 These things we also speak, not in words which man's wisdom teaches but which the Holy Spirit teaches, comparing spiritual things with spiritual. 14 But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. 15 But he who is spiritual judges all things, yet he himself is rightly judged by no one. 16 For "who has known the mind of the Lord that he may instruct Him?" But we have the mind of Christ.
NKJV

Now we know the problem of the modern church. The majority of parishioners do not know the things freely given to them because they are spiritually discerned. How can they rise to the occasion when faced with pandemic or political upheaval?

Paul said, "we have the mind of Christ." Do we? Would the thoughts and imaginations of our minds and hearts measure up to what Christ would think or imagine? Paul asks the same things in a positive way in Philippians four.

Moving to Chapter 3, Paul explained the spiritual temple and emphasized how we, as members of the body, will be judged on how we build the holy temple to the Lord. He then capped it by saying, "you are the temple."

1 Corinthians 3:16-17:
16 Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? 17 If anyone defiles the temple of God, God will destroy him. For the temple of God is holy, which temple you are. NKJV

Notice what is the punishment for defiling one's personal temple. Since we are the temple residence of the Holy Spirit, it is imperative to be aware of what we allow to enter that temple. Thoughts, actions, decisions, words are incorporated in the temple mix. Holiness must characterize it.

Skipping down to chapter six, Paul enumerates the cultural defilements which affect the society.

1 Corinthians 6:9-11:
Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, 10 nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God. 11 And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God.
NKJV

The Holy Spirit washes (cleanses), sanctifies (makes holy) and justifies (makes righteous) the believer—in the name of Jesus!

Recognizing the backgrounds of his constituents, Paul says, "some of you" once were one of the defiled, "but you" are now changed by the Spirit. (I like those "But You" clauses.)

Paul, once again, reviewed the culture and society surrounding the Corinthian church. Immorality was lightly viewed by the citizens of that city and area. Almost anything went unscathed by the Community. Government, and its Caesars, was debauched and very little was considered profane.

1 Corinthians 6:18-20:
18 Flee sexual immorality. Every sin that a man does is outside the body, but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body. 19 Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? 20 For you were bought at a price; therefore, glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God's. NKJV

"Betcha," no one will hear a message from this text on Sunday morning—we'll put this one in the book, "Sermons you never hear on Sunday because they are bad for the offering."

Addressing the issues concerning marriage, celibacy and widowhood, Paul invokes the Holy Spirit as witness to his teaching. (He is speaking as the oracles from God.) We, too, can know things the Spirit backs up, if we walk in the Spirit.

Observe how Paul clusters Spirit matters in these next verses:

1 Corinthians 12:1-14:
12 Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I do not want you to be ignorant: 2 You know that you were Gentiles, carried away to these dumb idols, however you were led. 3 Therefore, I make known to you that no one speaking by the Spirit of God calls Jesus accursed, and no one can say that Jesus is Lord except by the Holy Spirit.
4 There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. 5 There are differences of ministries, but the same Lord. 6 And there are diversities of activities, but it is the same God who works all in all. 7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all: 8 for to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healings by the same Spirit, 10 to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. 11 But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills.
12 For as the body is one and has many members, but all the members of that one body, being many, are one body, so also is Christ. 13 For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body — whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free - and have all been made to drink into one Spirit. 14 For in fact the body is not one member but many. NKJV

Before listing these vital attributes, Paul addressed idolatry (it was rampant in Corinth). The Jerusalem council required Gentiles to not worship idols, to eat nothing offered to idols, to drink no blood and refrain from sexual immorality-Paul covers all these matters in Corinthians.

However, Chapter 12 ushers in one of the greatest passages quoted from the New Testament. Paul teaches about spiritual gifts, starting with diversity of gifts. Three classifications are mentioned.

  1. Different ministries
  2. Different activities
  3. Different manifestations

The gifts are for the benefit of all and are given to enhance the work of the believer.

  1. the word of wisdom
  2. the word of knowledge
  3. faith
  4. gifts of healings
  5. discerning of spirits
  6. the working of miracles
  7. prophecy
  8. different kinds of tongues
  9. interpretation of tongues

How wonderful to belong to a fellowship of believers where all nine gifts are in abundance. But alas, where are they? How fortunate when all nine gifts operate in one person. (I believe ministries should be careful with platform people who are not operating in these gifts.) Church services should be so designed that these gifts take the forefront, and ministries must be led by the Spirit who endows them.

Using the physical body as an example, the Apostle showed where there is interdependency in the body of believers. Paul showed how all come together as one new man in Christ. Nothing need be lacking among believers if these gifts are functioning.

Remember, the Spirit doesn't give 8/9ths of the gifts to the church, for all nine must be given place. If spiritual discernment is missing, beware!

Paul, in chapters 14-15, discusses how man's inner spirit connects with the Holy Spirit and what are the results of this union.

The final passage concerning the Holy Spirit in I Corinthians is found in Paul's discussion of the resurrection.

1 Corinthians 15:44-45:
There is a natural body, and there is a spiritual body. 45 And so it is written, "The first man Adam became a living being." The last Adam became a life-giving spirit.
NKJV

Jesus "became a life-giving spirit." Hallelujah.

II Corinthians:

Mindful of all that was taught in I Corinthians, Paul opened II Corinthians by showing his inner investment and continued brotherhood with this church. Here, he declares that through the Spirit-God has joined them together.

2 Corinthians 1:20-22:
For all the promises of God in Him are Yes, and in Him Amen, to the glory of God through us. 21 Now He who establishes us with you in Christ and has anointed us is God, 22 who also has sealed us and given us the Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee.
NKJV

Four words are used, having great significance:

1. establishes NT:950 bebaioo (beb-ah-yo'-o); from NT:949; to stabilitate (figuratively): KJV - confirm, (e-) stablish.

2. anointed: NT:5548 chrio (khree'-o); probably akin to NT:5530 through the idea of contact; to smear or rub with oil, i.e. (by implication) to consecrate to an office or religious service: KJV - anoint.

3. sealed: NT:4972 sphragizo (sfrag-id'-zo); from NT:4973; to stamp (with a signet or private mark) for security or preservation (literally or figuratively); by implication, to keep secret, to attest: KJV - (set a, set to) seal up, stop.

4. guarantee: NT:728 NT:728 arrhabon (ar-hrab-ohn'); of Hebrew origin [OT:6162]; a pledge, i.e. part of the purchase-money or property given in advance as security for the rest. KJV - earnest.

Verses 21-22 form a beautiful picture of the work of the Spirit between Paul and the Corinthian brethren. His relationship with them is not tertiary, but deeply integrated. He is at one with them in spirit and heart. Paul's anointing is drawn upon by them. God intended to weld them together. To prove this comradery was from heaven, the Spirit of God has sealed them and becomes a guarantor in their lives.

These two verses challenge us to examine who we fellowship with and determines how we fellowship within the body of Christ. Profundity is a given when the Spirit seals us to a work.

When the Spirit establishes a person to a work, power can flow from the Lord and authority is given to accomplish His leading. The anointing surrounding that union is earth shattering. Participants can bind and loose, confront sin and command principalities and powers.

Oh, that the modern church would seek leadership by the "establishment of the Holy Ghost."

In chapter 3, Paul draws upon his "establishment" and clarifies his ministry among them.

2 Corinthians 3:1-3:
Do we begin again to commend ourselves? Or do we need, as some others, epistles of commendation to you or letters of commendation from you? 2 You are our epistle written in our hearts, known and read by all men; 3 clearly you are an epistle of Christ, ministered by us, written not with ink but by the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of flesh, that is, of the heart.
NKJV

Credentialism fades in the face of "establishment." Recommendations from religious prelates fade in light of being "established by the Spirit." Papers fade in comparison to being "written on the heart."

Corinthian epistles are readable people! See it in their faces, hear them when they speak, observe their candor and holiness—THAT IS THE ASSEMBLY to be a part of. All else is superficial and has no credence.

Hear Paul exalt such a union.

2 Corinthians 3:4-7:
And we have such trust through Christ toward God. 5 Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think of anything as being from ourselves, but our sufficiency is from God, 6 who also made us sufficient as ministers of the new covenant, not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.

My spirit longs to resound the importance of this verse.

Ministry is not definable in any other way than "sufficiency from the Spirit." Ministry of the new covenant is the only true ministry there is in Christendom.

The life-giving flow from the Spirit will draw the souls of men and cause the great awakening which must come.

2 Corinthians 3:7-11:
7 But if the ministry of death, written and engraved on stones, was glorious, so that the children of Israel could not look steadily at the face of Moses because of the glory of his countenance, which glory was passing away, 8 how will the ministry of the Spirit not be more glorious? 9 For if the ministry of condemnation had glory, the ministry of righteousness exceeds much more in glory. 10 For even what was made glorious had no glory in this respect, because of the glory that excels. 11 For if what is passing away was glorious, what remains is much more glorious.
NKJV

Dear Reader, think of it. The glory is missing in so much of what we call "ministry" because so much of religion does not draw from the Spirit.

Paul declares the veil that was on Moses and his congregation still remains—shielding the glory.

Hear him say:

2 Corinthians 3:14-18:
For until this day the same veil remains unlifted in the reading of the Old Testament, because the veil is taken away in Christ. 15 But even to this day, when Moses is read, a veil lies on their heart. 16 Nevertheless, when one turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away. 17 Now the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. 18 But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord.

NKJV

Thank and bless the Lord for verses 17-18. Ah! The transforming power from glory to glory flows around us, in us and through us. Like Ezekiel in the river—we can't touch bottom as we swim around in the glory! Transforming liberty touches the captive heart and releases the power to throw off the chains of addiction and walk in the light of freedom.

2 Corinthians 5:1-5:
5 For we know that if our earthly house, this tent, is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. 2 For in this we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed with our habitation which is from heaven, 3 if indeed, having been clothed, we shall not be found naked. 4 For we who are in this tent groan, being burdened, not because we want to be unclothed, but further clothed, that mortality may be swallowed up by life. 5 Now He who has prepared us for this very thing is God, who also has given us the Spirit as a guarantee. NKJV

Once again, Paul says the Spirit guarantees our eternal freedom. We will exchange mortality for immortality. We desire to be clothed in glory and leave those realms that hinder its flow. In these next verses, Paul breaks the impediments that have restrained him and opens his heart for examination. Nothing will stand in his way and hinder his ministry with them.

2 Corinthians 6:3-13:
3 We give no offense in anything, that our ministry may not be blamed. 4 But in all things we commend ourselves as ministers of God: in much patience, in tribulations, in needs, in distresses, 5 in stripes, in imprisonments, in tumults, in labors, in sleeplessness, in fastings; 6 by purity, by knowledge, by longsuffering, by kindness, by the Holy Spirit, by sincere love, 7 by the word of truth, by the power of God, by the armor of righteousness on the right hand and on the left, 8 by honor and dishonor, by evil report and good report; as deceivers, and yet true; 9 as unknown, and yet well known; as dying, and behold we live; as chastened, and yet not killed; 10 as sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, and yet possessing all things.

11 O Corinthians! We have spoken openly to you; our heart is wide open. 12 You are not restricted by us, but you are restricted by your own affections. 13 Now in return for the same (I speak as to children), you also be open. NKJV

Look at what Paul has to break through in order to stand before them. Look at verse 11 and hear the tear stained appeal. This was a man who cried out, "let me be accursed in order to see my fellow Jews be redeemed." There is no barrier big enough that he would not climb over in order to get to them. Every aspect of verses 3-10 show the love he had for the Corinthian church.

Now it is the Corinthian church's time to open their hearts.

Here is the zinger, "but you are restricted by your own affections." Slam Dunk, folks! That is what hinders the modern church, and it is high time to address it.

Now, Paul closes with a salutation from an open heart.

2 Corinthians 13:14:
14 The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. Amen.
NKJV

Oh! This is what we need: Grace, Love and Communion. It is through grace we are redeemed, and it is the love from God that came to our rescue, and it is the "companionismo" with the Spirit that sustains us. Fellowship with the Spirit is often neglected. He, who comes along side us and is a constant source of energy and direction in us, must be allowed an open heart.

Oliver Evangelistic Association, (OEA) , supplied $7000 US toward the $12,000 total cost for the Solar Units. Thanks for your gifts to make this possible.

Prior to this, OEA supplied $800 toward purchasing a small tract of land. Robert and Mary are great missionaries with heavy involvement in winning Botswana, check their work below.

Greetings from Botswana!

We are slowly completing the building of our ministry in Botswana. Below are some pictures of the progress.

This is the building containing the charging system for the lights which will shine at the gate. This process is very expensive.

This is directors house and small admin office. This system is about $6,800 dollars to power lights, appliances, plus extra freezers for food storage, and even heating appliances like iron. Bigger system will be needed for thr director and administration building needed for meetings as the weather heats.

This system is in orphan home one. It will be the same as in orphan home two.

This is another simple system for lights and charging phones. This is the tool shed and housing for workers coming to do construction. In addition, we have lights for general lighting areas. We will be putting 2 poles up with lights on them as our land plot is just over 5 acres. Also we have lighting for small chicken house under construction. Total cost of all solar around $12,000. We are awaiting final calculations as we have shaved off a couple smaller systems by joining house #2 to the caretakers house. We are moving toward seeking licensing after construction completed on the first two homes. This was a huge step forward. Each house is meant to house 12 children and a set of caretakers as parents - mom and dad.

Please pray with us as we screen suitable couples for these positions.

Here is the playground and garden at the orphan center with about 40 fruit trees planted. We also have goats at our farm as we seek to produce as much of our needs as possible in the future to cut our costs.

Here we are clearing the first fields for planting. Our farm is 109 acres. This field we are clearing first is about 10 acres. We are also drilling for water. Botswana is semi arid. We did not get a great water supply from the well so we will be placing drawing points in the nearby riverbed as well. Our goal is to plant crops for consumption at the orphan center, help the poor, and generate a cash crop to help supply needs for spreading the gospel and our community projects etc.. We also have some cows, and a dozen goats.

Please pray for help in developing the farm, personnel, and funds. Soon we will be plowing. We just have to do some destumping.

We just reveived this from Robert Grindley:

Greetings Dr. Oliver,

Thank you so much. Tomorrow the building inspector is coming to see our solar installation and inspect. God willing. Mary is busy at the the farm working on housing for farm workers. It should be finishing up today, making a few rooms for them. The next step is pulling the stumps and adding the solar pump for water and putting the draw point in the river. Mary has been reading and reading on goats, cows, and fish as she is working on getting the farm and future fish project in the pipeline. We have seen that our YouTube teachings are not getting as many views as we would like so we are going to launch facebook teachings by the end of the week. Last night we started a series called qualified with Tony Cooke. We are squeezing in this 12 part series with 10 bible training students in between semesters. As the year winds down, in December people start disappearing for villages to plow their fields and unfortunately many to worship their ancestors. I have taken a position on pastors board in our city and am hoping to revitalize this as right now it resembles Sardis. I can see what is possible. I am praying that the new board doesn't opt for the status quo. False prophet Bushiri was arrested in South Africa and then jumped bail to Malawi. He has done much harm to the body of Christ. We are hoping that hundreds of thousands of Christians will realize the difference between the real and fake gospel which he is a proponent of. I sometimes wonder if we are in the season of the great delusion.

About needs: At this point it seems we have many. I have been reading and praying about partners and will be taking some steps to reach out to gather some as really we are surviving on unusual levels of grace. As far as concrete needs, our truck is a 1998 and has seen better days. I think its time to retire it or maybe limit its usage to just donkey work. We would love to get a newer used truck for our community work and the farm. We would need about $8,000 to get something pretty good. What we have is also a back breaker to ride in. We got a call from a mechanic who is interested in our old one since he can probably put it back into something someone else would want so that could be part of meeting that need. Anyway, that is one of the needs that came to mind.

We appreciate your prayers very much.

Love,
Rob and Mary
