Promise Series Part 4

Healing Promises

2 Peter 1:2-4

2 Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord, 3 as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue, 4 by which have been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.

Introduction:

Just as the theme for our series is 2 Peter 1:2-4, Peter also penned one of the great healing passages that is oft quoted is found in I Peter 2:24 (referencing its companion source in Isaiah 53:4-5).

1 Peter 2:23-24:

(Jesus) when He was reviled, did not revile in return; when He suffered, He did not threaten, but committed Himself to Him who judges righteously; 24 who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness — by whose stripes you were healed.

Isaiah 53:4-5:

4 Surely, He has borne our griefs
And carried our sorrows;
Yet we esteemed Him stricken,
Smitten by God, and afflicted.
5 But He was wounded for our transgressions,
He was bruised for our iniquities;
The chastisement for our peace was upon Him,
And by His stripes we are healed.

Like many others, Peter attests that Jesus is the Healer. As a matter of fact, when Jesus described His anointing in Luke 4, most of His declarations were for healing. Peter was familiar with God as healer. He knew the Name, Jehovah Raphi. He knew Exodus 23:25 and Deuteronomy 7:14-15.

Exodus 23:25-26:

"So, you shall serve the Lord your God, and He will bless your bread and your water. And I will take sickness away from the midst of you.

Deuteronomy 7:14-16:

You shall be blessed above all peoples; there shall not be a male or female barren among you or among your livestock. 15 And the Lord will take away from you all sickness, and will afflict you with none of the terrible diseases of Egypt which you have known, but will lay them on all those who hate you.

Oh, it is so necessary that believers become familiar with all the passages regarding our healing, especially during these last day invasions of bio-warfare. The early Disciples were all acquainted with the Old Testament healing promises; we should be as well.

As an orthodox Jew, Simon was no doubt acquainted with Psalm 103:1-5:

Psalm 103:1-5:

Bless the Lord, O my soul;
And all that is within me, bless His holy name!
2 Bless the Lord, O my soul,
And forget not all His benefits:
3 Who forgives all your iniquities,
Who heals all your diseases,
4 Who redeems your life from destruction,
Who crowns you with lovingkindness and tender mercies,
5 Who satisfies your mouth with good things,
So that your youth is renewed like the eagle's.

Companion to these verses are those marvelous promises found in Isaiah 40 (Both mention eagle’s wings, but their approach is from differing directions.). Psalm 103 attacks the sickness itself, while this next set of verses attack the self-feelings often associated with sickness.

Isaiah 40:29-31:

He (the Lord) gives power to the faint and weary, and to him who has no might He increases strength [causing it to multiply and making it to abound]. [See: 2 Cor 12:9.]
30 Even youths shall faint and be weary, and [selected] young men shall feebly stumble and fall exhausted;
31 But those who wait for the Lord [who expect, look for, and hope in Him] shall change and renew their strength and power; they shall lift their wings and mount up [close to God] as eagles [mount up to the sun]; they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint or become tired. [See: Hebrews 12:1-3.]

I, personally, am leaning heavily upon these Isaiah 40 verses, by faith, as I write this newsletter. (Every word is cogent to my need and its promises are true and reliable. Praise God!)

Reliance upon His Word is the key to healing. Healing passages are precipitous and dependent upon our response to what is promised. Look at Psalm 107: 18-20.

Psalm 107:18-20:

They drew near to the gates of death.
19 Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble,
And He saved them out of their distresses.
20 He sent His word and healed them,
And delivered them from their destructions.

“He sent His word and healed them,” is very significant, for this newsletter is all about dependence on His Word regarding healing.

Sickness and disease are rampant and upon the minds of the world, making the Word of God of utmost importance. Pastors and Bible teachers should again focus on healing passages; individuals should memorize healing scriptures and Christians everywhere must be constantly aware of the greatness of these promises.

Passages like Malachi 4:2 exalt Jesus as healer and enforce His involvement in all healing.

Malachi 4:2:

But to you who fear My name
The Sun of Righteousness shall arise
With healing in His wings;

Dodie Osteen is a great example; she took daily doses of healing Scriptures and overcame cancer. She testified that she took the Word like medicine, multiple times daily, and declared, “I shall live and not die.” She is alive after more than thirty years.

Dr. Lavetta Williams, recently, declared Deuteronomy 1:11 during her bout with Covid, and she felt every day was indeed one thousand times better than the day before. God is faithful.

In both these cases, “the quickening of the mortal body” was evident and relied upon--based on the promise of Romans 8:11.

Romans 8:11:

11 But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.

Jesus applied His anointing to the quickening of Lazarus’s body and his restoration to his family. That’s what Jesus did numerous times in Scripture. Healing was a vital part of His ministry as was summed in Acts 10:38, Simon’s great testimony.

How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him. 39 And we are witnesses of all things which He did both in the land of the Jews and in Jerusalem, whom they killed by hanging on a tree. 40 Him God raised up on the third day, and showed Him openly, 41 not to all the people, but to witnesses chosen before by God, even to us who ate and drank with Him after He arose from the dead. 42 And He commanded us to preach to the people, and to testify that it is He who was ordained by God to be Judge of the living and the dead. 43 To Him all the prophets witness that, through His name, whoever believes in Him will receive remission of sins."

Healing must once again be a vital part of church ministry, with healing as part of all services.

John G. Lake’s ministry in South Africa magnified the importance of miracles in healing as over 100,000 were healed of the plague his first year there. Revival from God includes healing miracles. This element must be restored to the churches in order to be responsive to God’s Divine command. Note these two passages in Mark.

Mark 6:7-13:

7 And He called the twelve to Himself, and began to send them out two by two, and gave them power over unclean spirits. 8 He commanded them to take nothing for the journey except a staff — no bag, no bread, no copper in their money belts — 9 but to wear sandals, and not to put on two tunics.
10 Also He said to them, "In whatever place you enter a house, stay there till you depart from that place.
11 And whoever will not receive you nor hear you, when you depart from there, shake off the dust under your feet as a testimony against them. Assuredly, I say to you, it will be more tolerable for Sodom and Gomorrah in the day of judgment than for that city!"
12 So they went out and preached that people should repent. 13 And they cast out many demons, and anointed with oil many who were sick, and healed them.

Wouldn’t it be marvelous to have a similar testimony sounded in the morning worship time?

Look now to Mark 16.

Mark 16:14-20:

14 Later He appeared to the eleven as they sat at the table; and He rebuked their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they did not believe those who had seen Him after He had risen. 15 And He said to them, "Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. 16 He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned. 17 And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues; 18 they will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover." 19 So then, after the Lord had spoken to them, He was received up into heaven, and sat down at the right hand of God. 20 And they went out and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them and confirming the word through the accompanying signs. Amen.

The first Mark passage occurred when Jesus commissioned the twelve, during their training time. The second Mark passage speaks to a second commission, just before His leaving earth, and one which applies to all who believe. Why then does the average believer let the clergy do this work and shy away from carrying out their duty? There is great joy in fulfilling this ministry that every believer could have.

Please note Peter in Lydda as he carried out the great commission. Note the results of his obedience. Pay attention to how he gave glory to Jesus and what resulted. The whole city came to Jesus.

Acts 9:32-35:

32 Now it came to pass, as Peter went through all parts of the country, that he also came down to the saints who dwelt in Lydda. 33 There he found a certain man named Aeneas, who had been bedridden eight years and was paralyzed. 34 And Peter said to him, "Aeneas, Jesus the Christ heals you. Arise and make your bed." Then he arose immediately. 35 So all who dwelt at Lydda and Sharon saw him and turned to the Lord

When the body of believers understands the connections between testimonies of healing and mass response to the gospel, a fresh anointing will take place. Already, there are a few evangelists and pastors who are reporting healings occurring in their ministry and are amazed at public response to these events.

It is time to return to James 5:14.

James 5:13-18:

13 Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing psalms. 14 Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. 15 And the prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. 16 Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much. 17 Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed earnestly that it would not rain; and it did not rain on the land for three years and six months. 18 And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth produced its fruit.

Truly, when people of God do the commandments in James, there will be many healed in private settings, as well as public gatherings. I know, because I have witnessed raising from the dead, public healings and the results of laying on of hands and effective prayer.

John, the beloved, declared we can trust the promises and expect healing to manifest.

1 John 5:14-15:

14 Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. 15 And if we know that He hears us, whatever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we have asked of Him.

Healing promises are a wealth of blessing, and, in order to walk in kingdom wellness, must be relied upon.
