"The Holy Calling" - 2 Timothy 1

You may watch this Newsletter in a video HERE.

Introduction:

After being told in I Timothy to remain in Ephesus, as pastor, in order to confront those teaching "another gospel," Timothy, once again, hears from Paul.

1 Timothy 1:3-4:
--- remain in Ephesus that you may charge some that they teach no other doctrine, 4 nor give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which cause disputes rather than godly edification which is in faith.
NKJV

Timothy now is given quite another reason to remain at his post. He is to be an example of genuine faith and what it means to honor a "holy calling."

Remember, Timothy had appealed to Paul-who was in chains and in a Roman prison — to give him direction. Membership was thinning in his church as persecution mounted against the flock. This accounts for the tears bathing young Timothy's face. Perhaps this was why Paul opened with a word of encouragement.

2 Timothy 1:3-5:
I thank God, whom I serve with a pure conscience, as my forefathers did, as without ceasing I remember you in my prayers night and day, 4 greatly desiring to see you, being mindful of your tears, that I may be filled with joy, 5 when I call to remembrance the genuine faith that is in you.
NKJV

Yes, pastors need to know there are seasoned saints who are praying for them intensely and joyfully. Paul supplied that element of fellowship for Timothy. But Paul went beyond that realm and reminded Timothy that he had a generational obligation to maintain. Two generations had given him a heritage of genuine faith. (Is there such a thing as a feigned faith?)

Genuine faith is like the heroes of faith in Hebrews 11, who endured to the end of their lives.

Hebrews 11:30-40:
30 By faith the walls of Jericho fell down after they were encircled for seven days. 31 By faith the harlot Rahab did not perish with those who did not believe, when she had received the spies with peace.

32 And what more shall I say? For the time would fail me to tell of Gideon and Barak and Samson and Jephthah, also of David and Samuel and the prophets: 33 who through faith subdued kingdoms, worked righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions, 34 quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, out of weakness were made strong, became valiant in battle, turned to flight the armies of the aliens. 35 Women received their dead raised to life again.

Others were tortured, not accepting deliverance, that they might obtain a better resurrection. 36 Still others had trial of mockings and scourgings, yes, and of chains and imprisonment. 37 They were stoned, they were sawn in two, were tempted, were slain with the sword. They wandered about in sheepskins and goatskins, being destitute, afflicted, tormented — 38 of whom the world was not worthy. They wandered in deserts and mountains, in dens and caves of the earth.

39 And all these, having obtained a good testimony through faith, did not receive the promise, 40 God having provided something better for us, that they should not be made perfect apart from us.
NKJV

Paul lauded Timothy for his "overcoming faith," the kind that would be necessary against the foreboding future. Paul was saying, "I long to be visiting with you, for you are 'somebody important in the kingdom.'"

(Maybe it is time we hear that same note struck for ourselves. The cares of this world may have begun to wage spiritual warfare with your inner being, so it is important to return to foundational faith and lay aside those things that impede your spiritual walk.)

Paul had a remedy for Timothy that Christendom should inculcate.

2 Timothy 1:6:
Therefore, I remind you to stir up the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands.
NKJV

Ooh! This is the word of faith which must be immediate. Instead of the whining multitudes under spiritual depression —we must hear a holy stirring taking place. Look, Paul points out to Timothy the gift of God was IN him. Grace, mercy and peace was in him. What people need to grasp is the gift in them needs stirring up. Paul reminded Timothy when he was ordained, it was Paul who shared his anointings with him. Think of the power of such an investment. Giftings have been laid aside by many —it is time to pick them up, stir them up and shore up one's spiritual being. Laodicea lies ahead for those who don't.

Laying on of hands is an important element within the body; it is not to be done furtively or quickly. In the Old Testament one sees Jacob laying his hands on the next generation, while remembering Isaac's hands. In the New Testament, the book of James talks of the healing ministry by laying on of hands.

Paul's hands conveyed a spiritual force which could be called up and stirred up. With it was a confidence in young Timothy's faith-walk that conveyed an undeniable trust in his ability to carry out Paul's edict. (That kind of investment must once again surface among us.)

Paul met Timothy's fear head-on, with one of the most quoted passages in the Bible.

2 Timothy 1:7:
For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.
NKJV

The tenderness found in this verse is also overwhelming. Paul reiterates there is a "spirit" connected to fear and it doesn't come from God. God has given three powerful deterrents to fear (emphasis must focus on the word, "Given."). Power, Love and a Sound mind cooperate in tandem, not as separate entities. However, the learned Paul might well have had in mind an Old Testament promise.

Isaiah 40:28-31:
The Creator of the ends of the earth,
Neither faints nor is weary.
His understanding is unsearchable.
29 He gives power to the weak,
And to those who have no might He increases strength.
30 Even the youths shall faint and be weary,
And the young men shall utterly fall,
31 But those who wait on the Lord
Shall renew their strength;
They shall mount up with wings like eagles,
They shall run and not be weary,
They shall walk and not faint.
NKJV

Believers must saturate their minds with this truth, while looking at the huge number of "Fear Not" passages in the Bible. (Remember the first instance of fear in the Bible was in Genesis, when Adam said he was afraid after his fall. Satan often uses fear as a demoralizing tactic for he knows it is against God. During these terrifying times worldwide, one note must be heard above the fray, "Fear Not.")

God, who is love, freely gives Himself in behalf of those battling fear.

1 John 4:17-19:
17 Love has been perfected among us in this: that we may have boldness in the day of judgment; because as He is, so are we in this world. 18 There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love. 19 We love Him because He first loved us
NKJV

Paul wrote numerable passages about God's love becoming solace to the oppressed believer. Paul had all those scriptures incapsulated in his second deterrent.

Romans 8:33-39:
33 Who shall bring a charge against God's elect? It is God who justifies. 34 Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died, and furthermore is also risen, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us. 35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? 36 As it is written:
  • "For Your sake we are killed all day long;
  • We are accounted as sheep for the slaughter."
37 Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. 38 For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, 39 nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
NKJV

Next, Paul links these first two ingredients of power and love with possessing a sound mind. (Today, the reprobate mind opens the door to fear. The populace is bombarded with examples of dementia, depression, Alzheimer's, autism and ADHD.)

Alas, across the whole of society there manifests what Paul terms: "deceitful lusts."

Ephesians 4:17-24:
17 This I say, therefore, and testify in the Lord, that you should no longer walk as the rest of the Gentiles walk, in the futility of their mind, 18 having their understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God, because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart; 19 who, being past feeling, have given themselves over to lewdness, to work all uncleanness with greediness.

20 But you have not so learned Christ, 21 if indeed you have heard Him and have been taught by Him, as the truth is in Jesus: 22 that you put off, concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts, 23 and (you) be renewed in the spirit of your mind, 24 and that you put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness.
NKJV

Notice who it is that must apply these attributes. When the believer embraces the renewed mind, it becomes a force against fear and is a repository of what Paul terms: "a sound mind." The Amplified Bible says it like this:

2 Timothy 1:7:
…a calm and well-balanced mind and disciplined and full of self-control.
AMP

Nothing defeats fear more than a "guarded" mind.

Philippians 4:6-7:
Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; 7 and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
NKJV

Having the strength provided by the triumvirate of power, love and a sound mind, Paul reaches into the spiritual root of Timothy's concerns in these next verses.

2 Timothy 1:8-9:
Therefore, do not be ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me His prisoner, but share with me in the sufferings for the gospel according to the power of God, 9 who has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace which was given to us in Christ Jesus before time began,
NKJV

Knowing how easy it would be to "throw in the towel" and in desperation leave the ministry, Paul challenges this young pastor to enter into covenant with him; hence, the reference to "suffering with him." He tells Timothy not to be ashamed of Jesus or him. Paul beckons him to "share with me." (Notice, there is no hierarchy, rank or strata in this appeal, only a tender invitation to join him in suffering for the Gospel.)

Is this not a great invitation for today? Sharing creates a brotherhood of mutuality — a camaraderie in prayer and in holding each other up. The crowd of witnesses know the efficacy of such companionship!

Working together, like a team, has its advantages, but imagine the appeal of being linked to Paul, the apostle. Suffering together for the gospel, according to the POWER OF GOD, is a level of commitment beyond the ordinary.

Paul quickly attaches the work of that Power to the things they are experiencing. Jesus's power not only saved them, but called them. This, also, is not just any kind of calling; it is a holy calling.

Just a cursory reading of Leviticus, reviewing the elements of the first tabernacle, reveals the importance of holiness in the judgement of God. Carry this over into today's Christianity, and it becomes evident that our base is not holiness and that needs to change. Pulpits are silent in the face of true holiness — this ought not to be.

Returning to the text, look now at this translation.

2 Timothy 1:9:
9 [For it is He] Who delivered and saved us and called us with a calling in itself holy and leading to holiness [to a life of consecration, a vocation of holiness]; [He did it] not because of anything of merit that we have done, but because of and to further His own purpose and grace (unmerited favor) which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began [eternal ages ago].
AMP

Paul quickly acknowledges the fact God's divine plan, which included them, was formulated before the world began and was not based on their worthiness or works.

Hallelujah, this makes me want to shout! Many times, the Scriptures affirm the eternality of things. These are just a few: "A lamb slain before the world began." Jesus saying, "This fulfills a certain prophet's words." "Known before you were in your mother's womb."

There is an eternal element operating in us to the glory of God; we should be aware of its propensity and fear not! That person is at perfect peace whose mind is stayed upon Him.

2 Timothy 1:12:
I know whom I have believed and am persuaded that He is able to keep what I have committed to Him until that Day.

MISSIONS REPORT:

From: Oliver Evangelistic Association (OEA) - A Missions Opportunity

In conjunction with Brother Ghiorghi Cazacu with Gospel Ministries International, Inc. of Romania and correlates of his ministry in India, we are supplying the church building in its entirety.

Bro Cazacu reported from the Indian Pastor Joshua on the progress of the church building in Ander Pradesh. This series shows the whole-hearted support of the membership in carrying out the work. Although the Hindu radicals have sought to stop the work...the legal system ruled for the church, so it progresses. We must pray for their safety and the testimony of Jesus in their area.

Freedom Christmas Miracles for the Brickyard Slaves

The December Newsletter, mentioned "Freedom Christmas Miracles for the Brickyard Slaves." These families had been slaves to the brickyard all their lives-born under the debt of previous generations and never able to pay it off.

The Oliver Evangelistic Foundation, thanks to their donors was able to free seven families from this enslavement. They not only were set free with legal papers verifying their freedom, but will also be discipled in the Word, assisted to rent a house for a month or two, given food to eat as well as being set up in a small business to enable them to sustain their new freedom.

The Azaz family was one of those freeded slaves.

Azaz had been in the brickyard factory since he was born, He married another brickyard slave and his children were born at the brickyard factory. His family tried so hard to pay their inherited debt, they would make 1100 bricks a day. Azaz prayed every day to be able to give a free life to his children. He and his family are now free and able to run their own business.
